Indian Railway is the common mode of transport of people in India and it has offered many concessions to those who are disabled, students, artists, doctors, national awardees, people traveling for treatment, etc.

Physically disabled persons get 50% to 75% concessions on the Second Class, Sleeper Class, First Class and Air Conditioned coaches. This is also applicable to the person accompanying him or her. Men of 60 years and above and women of 58 years and above are considered as senior citizens and they get a concession of 40% and 50% respectively on all classes of travel.

Those who are recipients of national awards also get about 50% concession in the Second Class and Sleeper Class. Students going to their hometowns or traveling for any educational purpose and youth traveling to attend an interview get a concession of 50% in the Second Class and Second Sleeper Class. Artists and doctors also get a discount on their tickets.

The concession is applicable by Indian Railway only on the basic fare of the ticket and not on any other charges. If the journey is borne by the central government or state government, you will not get any concession. It is provided only for a minimum distance of 300 km, except in special cases. Except for senior citizens, the concession is permitted only by producing a certificate requesting for the same. Senior citizens do not have to produce any proof of their age at the time of booking of the ticket, but they have to carry an ID proof showing their age at the time of their journey in the train.
